#1: Minimalist Side Table or Plant Stand

With the minimalist trend now going on, and the prices that come with it, one can only dream of becoming rich to be able to pay for that stuff, or DIY the crap out of it! Here is my favorite DIY, straight from the dollar store.

You are going to need:

3 Wire toilet paper holders ($3)

1 Circular wall clock ($1)

Duck Tape ($4)

Your choice of color spray paint ($4) or faux marble shelf liner ($6-$9)

And E-6000 or a hot glue gun with glue ($2)

Total $14-$19 before taxes

Instructions:

First, pull the clock apart and remove everything but the frame, glass and backing. Second put the glass on the frame and spray paint the inside (as many layers as needed) or insert a cut out of the marble liner to fit the circle (No Glue Necessary) . After the paint is completely dry, put the backing on. Next, grab the toilet paper holders and bend them slightly. Make sure they all are equally bent at the same degree angle. Now is time to glue them to the table. Position the base of the holders on the back of the clock. Make sure the distance between the legs is equal. Once you have the position set up, begin pouring glue on the areas where the metal touches the clock. Then secure the legs to the clock with tape to make sure the metal is in contact with the clock and to reenforce the legs. Wait the recommended time for the glue to dry. Then turn your table around because it is ready! You can cover up the tape with spray paint if you like but since it is in the bottom, only you and I will know.

#2 Crate Shelves

Here is a quick and easy DIY for not only organizing your home, but decorating it with a bit modern and bit rustic touch. This is another of my favorite decor ideas, and i currently use it on my open door closet to organize my shoes with style.

What you are going to need is:

9 Dollar store plastic crates ($9)

2 Foam Project Board ($3)

7 Zip ties ($3)

Spray Paint ($4)

Instructions:

Put the crates together in 3 columns and 3 rows or viceversa depending on if you want a tall or short shelf. Zip Tie them together through the back holes of their inner walls side to side and up and down. Should be 4 zip ties sideways and 3 up and down. Cut one of the foam boards in 9 pieces and put the inside the compartments as the floor. Cut the second foam board to fit the top of the shelf. You can glue them on place or use the weight of the objects to keep the boards in place. I prefer no glue in case the foam boards get damaged to replace them easily. Now all you have to do is put your shelf in place and fill it up. Like i said before, i use this in my closet to organize my shoes but you can use this in the kitchen, in the bathroom, pretty much anywhere.

#3 Wall Hanged Shelves (Crate Shelves With Doors)

It’s similar to the previous DIY but EXTRA! For thisone you will only need:

3 crates ($3)

3 8⅕x11 Frames ($3)

3 Zip ties ($1)

3 small hinges ($3)

2 hangers ($2)

E-6000 ($3)

And Spray paint ($4)

Total: $19

Instructions:

First, connect the crates the with the zip ties. Second, dismantle the frames, then glue the left side of the hinges to the right side of the back of the frames. Check the distance of the frame in comparison with the crates before gluing the hinges to make suse the frames are centered on the crates. Third, glue the right side of the hinges to the left side of each crate, and hold in place for as long as it would take for the glue to dry. Do not close the door/frame or it will be glued shot. Once the frames are glued dry to the crates, spray paint the whole thing. Lastly, once the paint is dried, glue the glass to the frames, and the hangers to the back of the crates. When the glue is dried, your fancy shelf is ready to hang. This one i used on the bathroom and put my perfumes in them and some plants to decorate. It looks so fancy with my decor!

#4 Glass Backed Picture Frames

This… is … the easiest of all!!! Just get two of the largest frames at the dollar store, which are the 8 ⅕ x 11 ones. And replace the back of one of the frames. Grab the glass of the other frame and glue a smaller picture (4x6 or smaller) to the center of it. To finalize it, just put the glass with the picture in the frame and close the metal pins really tight. Now, just make sure the hanger is on the frame not the backing. If not you are going to have to remove it from the backing and attach it to the frame. Easy breezy! And you only spent $3 at most.

#5 Wall Flower Garden

This is another simple one is super simple. Just got four plastic grass squares at the dollar store and a bunch of flowers i liked. I pulled apart the flowers from the stems and glued them to the empty spaces of the grass’ frame. Then they are ready to hang. I play with this design as my mood changes. I sometimes hang them together in a big square, sometimes in four separate squares, and sometimes in four diamond shapes forming a larger diamond shape. I have it in the bathroom in front of the mirror, ready for selfies!

The materials were:

4 plastic grass squares ($4)

E-6000 ($3)

$13 of flowers

Total: $20

#6 Pottery Barn Tile Mirror

Another simple one. God bless the dollar store for this one, because this design goes for $699, and there is no way i am spending that amount on a mirror unless it is the magical mirror from Snow White.

All you need is:

1 Foam Project Board ($1)

16 Squared candle holder mirrors ($16)

E-600 ($3)

2 Hangers ($1)

Total: $21 (yes I know, i'm one dollar over)

Instructions:

Put the mirrors on the board in a 4x4 square, and mark the size on it. Take them off and measure one inch smaller from the right and one inch smaller from the bottom and cut that smaller square off. That would make sure you don't see the ugly foam board behind the mirrors. Next mark the center of the board with an end to end cross. Remove the feet of the candle holders and glue four of them in the center of the board with each corner of the mirrors pointing at the center. Then glue the rest of the mirrors; this ones will be slightly outside of the board, on purpose. Let the mirrors dry before you turn it to glue the hangers. And, Voila! You got your own $699 Pottery Barn Mirror for only $20. Just put it on you light stand or hang it on a wall. I have mine on the back wall of my closet. It is so gorgeous, and so useful.

#7 Glass Box

OMG i am giving you so many easy gorgeous decor ideas, you should be thanking me by now. This one you can use to put jewelry, plants or crystals inside. I have it on my bathroom sink with some baby cactuses and some rocks i found hiking in Sedona, Just a reminder of the beauties of Arizona, as if going out to the burning sun isn’t enough. LOL.

You are only going to need:

4 4x6 frames ($4)

2 3x4 frames ($2)

E-6000 ($3)

Total: $9

Instructions:

Dismantle the frames and remove the the the metal pins that hold the back of the frames. Then, glue the glass to the frames and let them dry. Once dry, put one of the 4x6 frames looking down on the table/floor and glue the 3x4s on top on the each of the shorter sides. Once the 3x4s are secured enough, glue 2 of the remaining 4x6 on the sides of the longer part of the frame. Make sure this ones are on the sides of the frame, not on top like the 3x4s. Let the glue dry, meanwhile, glue the left side of the hinges to the left of the longer side of the last 4x6 frame. Make sure to measure with the box before gluing the hinges to make sure the frame is centered. This will be the lid. Once the glue is dry, glue the right side of the hinge to the top of the box. Do not close the box yet. Hold open until the glue drys to make sure it does not glue shot. And, your box is ready!

#8 Hanging Wire Baskets

A simple hack for the small things in your pantry or closet. For this DIY you will need:

A box of large office paperclips ($6)

3-4 wire baskets ($4)

Total: $10

Instructions:

For this project i will have to give you the basics and you will have to measure design it to your liking. Basically what you are going to do is make a long chain of paper clips going down from the hanger to the height where you want your basket to be. Then make 4 smaller, same size chains to go from the main one to the corners of the top of your basket. To make more floors of baskets just measure 4 links of the same sizes of the first 4 ones for each of the baskets and connect them bottom to top. You can do as many baskets as you want, you just have to measure the length of the chains.

#9 Flower Lamp/Candle Base

This one is just gorgeous, and you can use it for parties as well as for decorating your home.

You just need a glass bowl and coffee filters. I will not go through the process of making coffee filter flowers, because there are many designs and styles and i want to live that to your choice. But basically, you just have to glue the flowers to the glass bowl and put a candle or an LED light inside. The amount of flowers and the size of them is up to you.

#10 Geometric Pendants

Finally, the thing that broke tumblr. The geometric pendants. There are many shapes and designs for this one. They can be used as lamps, plant hangers, or just by their own. But, they truly bring an Extra to your room decor. This is the budget friendly version of the DIY, but to make it even MORE EXTRA! If possible, even if grammatically incorrect. All you have to do is replace the straws with thin copper pipes from your favorite home improvement store, and the thread with fishing lines.

But, for the budget you are going to need:

48 Straws ($2) (you can use normal size straws for large pendants or coffee straws for smaller ones. If you get the bending ones from the dollar store, cut off the bending part)

Scissors ($1)

Spray Paint ($4-9)

1 roll of Thread, and a needle to make your life easier. You'll know what i'm talking about. ($1)

Total: $8-$13

Instructions:

Cut one third off 16 of the straws to make them shorter. Grab eight of those short straws and 8 of the long ones, and place them on the table/floor in a octagonal cartwheel shape with the long ones inside as the spokes, and the short ones outside as the tire. Next, tie a knot on the needle with the thread to avoid it from separating. Then, run the needle through one of the triangles of the wheel connecting two long straws and one short one, starting from the middle of the wheel and ending back in the middle. Once in the center, tie a strong knot closing the loop. Now, All you have to do is loop the thread around the rest of the straws to connect them to the main triangle in the following way: from the center insert the needle to the next long straw to the right, then the small straw moving back towards the first triangle, then back through the right straw of the first triangle out through the center of the wheel. Now you should have two connected triangles. Tie a tight knot in the center and repeat with the next straws until you have connected the entire wheel. If you run out of thread, just cut the thread off the needle leaving enough space to tie more thread to it to elongate it. Then, tie it back to the needle and continue. Grab 16 long straws and place two by to in triangular shapes outside your wheel forming a sun shape. Loop some thread inside each one of the triangles to connect the long straws to the short ones on the outside of the wheel making a tight knot on the tip of the triangles. Once you have completed the sun shape, grab the remaining eight short straws and connect them to the tips of your sunrays the following way: starting from the ones closer to you, pass the needle downwards through the right straw of the left triangle, then through the through the short straw towards the right triangle, then upwards through the left straw of the right triangle, and tie a tight knot where the two long straws meet. You will notice the pendant to start getting a 3d shape. Now connect all of the tips of the triangles the same way until you get a bowl shape. Once you have that bowl shape, all you have to do is repeat the wagon wheel spokes method from the bottom of the bowl on the top, looping around the thread and tying very tight to itself in the middle until the whole wheel is complete. To make it hang, get some additional thread and tie a knot on the top central point of the week, then roll one of the sides of the thread through every hole in between the spokes to fortify the link to the hanging thread. Then tie another tight knot and it is ready to hang. To finish it up, spray paint it and it's ready to make your space look like out of a tumblr picture.
